Applying Material or Logo to 3D Geometry in V5

The following is a tip for applying a jpg file to 3D geometry for visualization using Apply Material functionality. This is handy for visualizing a 2D layout on the factory floor or applying an image such as a logo to a vehicle.

The next steps will guide you in creating an image for reuse within a DELMIA simulation.

Open the following file where the DELMIA install directory is located \startup\materials\Catalog.CATMaterial file.

You will see the following dialog box.

The catalog contains by default from DELMIA most representation and properties of materials that will be used for product designers.

We can reuse this catalog for storing 2D factory floor layouts and other images needed for creating simulations or analyses.

First we need to have a jpg file for use as a material. As an example we will use the following Cloud.jpg file.


We can create a new family of images under its own page or tab.

Select New Family icon and a new family/tab has been created.


You may rename the family by selecting Rename Family icon. I have renamed it to Environment.

Now we want to add a new material to the Environment family so select New Material icon.

We now populate the Environment family with a default New Material.

Right Mouse Button (RMB) click on the New Material and select Properties.

We now have a properties dialog window to make our modifications and add our Cloud.jpg as a material.

Feature Properties Tab – Feature Name: I have renamed this to Cloud

Rendering Tab –

Depending on size of material you would like to add the material to, modify the Material Size. I will be placing my Clould.jpg onto a flat surface 1000in x 1000in square area. So I am going to put 2000 in for my Material size as a start. Since I am also placing this onto a flat surface then I will select Planar Mapping as the type of material I would like to place this on.

Under the Lighting tab for this example I will not make any modifications, I will move to the Texture tab.

Under the Texture tab by default the image will look like this.

Select from the Type pull down arrow the Image type and you will see the following image.

Under Image Name browse to where you have stored your image, in this example I have browsed to where my Cloud.jpg is located. Notice the property wheels become active as well. For this example we will not at this time manipulate the wheels.

Notice also that the planar part in the preview window has an image imbedded now. You may also rotate this.

Now you have added your image as a material and now select Apply and then OK to close out the dialog window.

Now look in the Family page and you will see that your default material is now what you created, in my example it is a Cloud

Now save your Catalog.CATMaterial with the changes you have made or Save As and this will be your custom Catalog.

If you know the material properties of your image you may use the other properties tabs within Properties dialog box to enhance your image to be used on a product for analysis, this example does not take this into account.

Applying your new material/logo to an existing CATPart

Go to Part Design workbench and open an existing CATPart to apply your material.

Select the highest level in the branch, in this case it’s the Example Part root level

Select Apply Material icon and browse to where you have your Catalog.CATMaterial where you have added your material/logo

Select the Tab where your material/logo has been stored. In this example it is stored under Environment

Now select the material/logo you would like to use on your 3D geometry and select Apply Material. Now your material/logo has been applied to your 3D geometry.

Select OK and save your file. You now have applied your material/logo to your 3D geometry.

Now if the material/logo is not the size you want or if you have multiple images on the geometry, RMB on the image in the tree and select Properties. You now can work with the material as it lays on your 3D geometry.

  2. Great summary. Much better than any of the online documentation within Delmia or in the Knowledgebase. I have noticed that the texture-mapped image is slightly darker than the original jpeg of tiff. Is there a way to brighten the image within Delmia or is this simply a “feature” of texture mapping. Thanks for your help.

  3. Someone else correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe that’s just a so called “feature” of texture mapping. Maybe you could lighten the image with an external program like photo editor before you apply it.
